Pete and Woody taught me to “Agitate” so here goes:
Portland Public Schools Custodians are again struggling with the PPS School Board to obtain a decent contract. They have been at the bargaining table since March. PPS refuses to implement the very salary range/step scale that PPS demanded at the contract talks over two years ago. The custodians handed over MAJOR ECONOMIC CONCESSIONS when they agreed to the districts demand for the salary range/step scale.
PPS has had major savings because a majority of custodians today do not earn as much as the custodians who were illegally terminated by PPS in 2002 earned at the time they were terminated. Now the district wants to FREEZE THE VERY SALARY RANGE/STEP SCALE THAT THEY DEMANDED. It is the SEIU Bargaining teams position that their members cannot afford to have their wages frozen like this indefinitely at the whim of PPS ! ! !
PLEASE COME TO RALLY IN SUPPORT OF THE CUSTODIANS ! ! ! Tuesday October 12th, 2010

Note: Portland Custodians Have Been Working Without Any Wage Increases Since Returning To Their Jobs In 2006. PPS Board is now demanding that salary range/step scale that THEY created should not be implemented i.e. No Annual Step Increases ! ! !

K.C., I am with you in spirit, though I have moved from the district. From just across the Beaverton divide, PPS looks even worse. Front to back, top to bottom, PPS administration screws just about everything up: equity, academics, labor relations, facilities planning, public engagement, parent engagement, special ed., ELL, the arts, libraries and more. It’s not for lack of trying at the line level. Lots of great teachers and staff are jerked around by BESC, given bubkes to work with, and bubkes in their paychecks.
Stand firm in solidarity! They still might mess with ya, but they’re gonna mess with ya even harder if you don’t hang together!
