Redneck hockey, politics, and Alex Charns

by Steve, June 14th, 2006

Yours truly is not the only one who is nuts for hockey and world peace. Durham, N.C. civil rights attorney and author Alex Charns has been making the news (at least in Edmonton) and raising some redneck hockey fan eyebrows with his game night protests in Raleigh.

Both the Edmonton Journal and Sun have run articles about him and his righteous antics during the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and the Carolina Hurricanes.

Charns is the author of “How Hockey Saved the World* (and defeated George W. Bush, but not necessarily in that order)”.

Sing it loud, and sing it proud: More Hockey! Less War! More Hockey! Less War!

Thanks, Alex.

  1. Comment from Alex Charns:

The power of the “More Hockey! Less War!” movement was seen last night outside the RBC Center before Game 5 of the Finals. Oilers fans and Canes fans jointly held a sign that said: “Be more like Canada: Make hockey, not War.” The sign had a maple leaf and a No W symbol.

Authorities believe that this cooperation between rival tribes of hockey fans was incited by a certain group calling itself morehockeylesswar.org.

Protesters were overheard talking about a More Hockey! Less War! North American virtual tour.

    Thank you for your support.

    Congratulations Carolina!!!!!
As a Canadian fan of my local Ottawa Senators I would like to express my congrats to all of you Canes fans. Your series with Edmonton was excellent…..both teams are great, but thre can only be one winner. Thanks for the entertainment…..let peace reign.

Thanks, Jim. Hope you saw the “More Hockey! Less War! movement on the CBC TV morning show at 6:45AM outside the RBC arena yesterday.

What I told our friends North of the border was: “The Canes won the Cup, but Canadians won the war. Canada’s biggest export, hockey, made it past U.S. Homeland Security and invaded the American southland. It’s taking root everywhere. As we Americans become more Canadian, we’ll have less interventionist, preemptive wars. As hockey spreads, Bush’s approval ratings continue to go down.

    Coincidence? I think not.

The “More Hockey, Less War” movement might make it into the documentary “A Search for Meaning” about hockey fans that Simon Dekker from Alberta is doing. He filmed fans outside the RBC arena doing the “More Hockey! Less War! chant with some Oilers fans.

We shall see if the movement makes it to the big Canadian screen. Here’s the link: http://www.soontba.com/asearch.....fault.html

Make hockey, not war. There is no stopping us now.
