Prudes v. Adams

by Steve, January 29th, 2009

Some of the prudes, Victorians and hypocrites, who, as evidenced by their statements, obviously want to turn back the clock on sexual liberty:

  • The editorial board of Just Out: “By his own admission, by committing the act of lying to the citizens of Portland, Adams has failed to show the principled character that this publication feels is a basic requirement for an elected official.”
  • Jeana Frazzini, executive director of Basic Rights Oregon, as quoted in Willamette Week: “We condemn what he did, but we support him going forward.”
  • Oregonian columnist Anna Griffin, as quoted by Byron Beck in Willamette Week: “Way to go, Sam. Way to play into the stereotype.”
  • Dan Savage in the Stranger, July 2008 (tip o’ the hat to Matt Davis): “Gay men in their 30s and 40s who will date teenage boys are almost always scum….”
  • Mark Wiener, quoted in Time: “I believe what I said was, ‘You’re a f___ing moron,'” says Wiener. “I was, and am, pissed and saddened by it.”

did they really use the f word in TIME? I am shocked!

  2. Comment from Steve:

Time printed it as I quoted: “f___ing”.

  3. Comment from marcia:

    that is funny!

  4. Comment from Steve:

I spell it “effing.” But whenever I say that around the house, one of the kids says, “you mean ‘fucking’?”

  5. Comment from Wacky Mommy:

    My children do not curse.

  6. Comment from Steve:

    …much.

  7. Comment from Lex DeNovo:

Your title, Steve, for this post is “Prudes vs. Adams.” I don’t get if it’s a tongue in cheek reference or not: truly, are the persons you quote “prudes”? I think not. So, if its a call-out on them, it makes no sense to me. Help me understand. Kthxbye!

  8. Comment from Steve:

I’ve been called a prude for being offended by Sam Adams’ dishonesty, and accused of fixating on the sexual aspect of it. This post is merely intended to expose the absurdity of the passionately credulous Adams supporters who think Sam’s critics are nothing but a bunch of right-wing fundamentalists. Even his supporters call him things like “sloppy man-whore.”

  9. Comment from Becca:

While Dan Savage did say that at one time, he has certainly been supporting Adams. You might want to note that, as I think the use of the quote may be misleading given the context.

  10. Comment from Steve:

For those not following details of the story, this was a list of people who either support Sam Adams (Frazzini, Savage), are prominent in the gay community (Just Out), or who have worked closely with Adams (Wiener), who have said things critical of Sam Adams or the kind of thing he did.

Calling these people “prudes, Victorians and hypocrites” was an (evidently lame) attempt at sarcasm based on the unconscious irony of Adams’ supporters calling his detractors these names.

    I apologize for the snark.

    No I don’t.

  11. Comment from Lex DeNovo:

Yeah. Don’t apologize. Especially, don’t give us one of those non-apology apologies (Sportstud: “I apologize to all those who I may have offended.”) or one of those not nearly enough, far-from-innocent-mistake apologies (a la Tim Geithner and Tom Daschle).

  12. Comment from Steve:

    I’m not sorry.
