The last six pieces are not really my type, but knowing I must diversify, I shall take these as pointers for exploration. After all, aren't the Beethoven String Quartets just mood music? It's difficult to characterise these generally, but no. 12, opus 127, starts as a real grunge match of teeth shaking intensity leading to incredible hope through the catharsis.
Which may be all we have left if Bush and Blair don't go soon, and they just will not go.
Best wishes,
Ken

I have to admit I'm more of a Late Romantics type of girl; I'll take Tchaikovsky over Beethoven any day. Sorry! :(

Happy TT, though!
... No mention of more current musicians because?
Poncho Sanchez is current. He's playing in Solano Beach, CA tonight.

To be honest, I have been very lazy about checking out new stuff over the last ten years, and I haven't been exposed to anything that bears careful listening like the stuff I listed. Mostly I've been into Latin jazz, which, in my opinion, is one a branch of jazz that hasn't gone completely moribund. I listed an old album by Sanchez, because he's such a master, and it was such a great era for him. But there is lots of good stuff happening with younger guys out there. That can be the subject of a future TT: fave Latin Jazz of the 21st century.

I must say that you have excellent taste. :-) in my humble opinion. I love the 9th Symphony . . . once heard it at the Hollywood Bowl on a Sunday night with Mehta conducting. Heaven. My flute duet partner and I play some Beethoven and Bach. Ya can't go wrong. Spent more hours than I want to remember playing Bach inventions for piano lessons. Can still plays parts from memory . . . just bits and pieces. And your jazz choices are great. Davis, Coltrane . . . wonderful stuff. No mention of more current musicians because?

Ok...so it's a bit weird that I've Beethoven's 9th. playing as I peruse through your 13. Coincidence? hmmm... I do agree with you on the Quartet's as well. I started out on piano...eight years worth before I touched another instrument. The basics I received there has allowed me to, almost, self teach on the sax, clarinet, and flute. Someday I hope to pick up cello and violin. I am going to make it a point to pick a couple of the jazz albums you mentioned as well. Great 13!
